Arable Barn – St. Albans, UK
2008 – Planning
The project addresses the concerns of how to conserve and enhance an existing Grade II listed barn conversion in St. Albans. The emphasis is on expressing the listed structure of the barn and how this can be most sympathetically exposed and emphasized through the use of pure geometric forms to house the proposed additional unit.
The architectural approach involved critical and historical analysis of its given condition and careful and selective demolition of all extraneous components. Working closely with the client, a graphic designer, the strategy was to temper the language of the new intervention. Its precise construction and geometry are balanced against the simplicity of the existing timber frame creating a clear distinction between the contemporary addition and the historic structure.
