Vabaduse Square – Rakvere, Estonia
2009 – Competition
Prize winning competition entry for a new public square in Rakvere, Estonia. The existing Vabaduse Square has been isolated by the surroundings roads and has recently served as a rather large traffic island with no pedestrian access. The existing buildings facing the square also lack continuity and do not provide sufficient street frontage to contain the square. In line with the future aspirations for this area, the proposal aims to create a new public space with a consolidated urban character and to re-introduce some of the spatial qualities the designs for the Vabaduse Square had originally envisaged.
