Southwark Local High Streets – London, UK

2010 – Planning

Working in consortium with Saltash and Castle-Davies as a design and procurement team, Delvendahl Martin Architects were appointed by Southwark Council as designers for this regeneration project. The project forms part of the ILRE programme (Improvement of local retail environments), which is aimed at improving the physical conditions of some of the borough’s local retail parades. It covers 9 sites identified through consultations with Community Councils. The ILRE programme has been developed to ensure the long-term survival of these vital local shops and sustain the communities that they serve. In consultation with the retailers, the team has developed a strategy identifying main areas of action such as de-cluttering of the existing building fabric, improvements to the public realm and the replacement of shop fronts based on a flexible system of building components.
